EMDR Therapy for PTSD, Trauma, and Chronic Pain

I am a Certified EMDR Therapist. This designation requires completion of “Level I and II” training in EMDR, a training recognized by EMDRIA, the EMDR International Association. It also requires many hours of consultation and client hours of EMDR practice. From January 2013 to January 2016, I served as the NW Regional EMDRIA Coordinator,  a role in which I facilitated training and communication among regional EMDR therapists.

From my very first training in EMDR (in 2010), I have been very impressed with it as a fast and powerful technique to heal people of a vast array of symptoms. Most people find at least some relief in the very first reprocessing session they have.  It is so satisfying to see people get help so quickly, for problems they have sometimes had for years. I have continued with additional training, to complete my “Level I and II” training, as well as workshops and study in using EMDR to treat attachment trauma, birth and infant trauma, chronic pain, and addiction/cravings.

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, was developed as a therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  It is an evidence-based therapy that has been shown in multiple studies to be effective.  EMDR Therapy is recognized as an effective treatment for PTSD by the Veteran’s Administration for combat veterans. EMDR is usually effective in reducing the symptoms of traumatic, unprocessed memories which can cause anxiety, depression, flashbacks, phobias, and being triggered by seemingly-unrelated situations. Since its “discovery” nearly 30 years ago, EMDR has been found to be effective in treating blocking beliefs, depression, indecision, addiction, eating disorders, and complex PTSD (history of ongoing childhood abuse and/or neglect).

EMDR is also often used to treat single-incident trauma, such as an automobile accident, and as such may be effective in a few short sessions. As part of treatment for more complex issues, it may be one of the therapies used over time which greatly enhances the efficacy of  “talk therapy”.
